The section that I chose to model is part of the line that ran from Newnan, to Griffin, GA. I chose this line to model due to my interest in the C.G. and it is close to where I grew up. The time period of the layout is Jan. 1950 to June 12, 1963. This will allow me to run steam and all of the diesels that the C.G. owned and operated.stewarttrains_98http://www.blogger.com/profile/08920150479736411604noreply@blogger.comBlogger22125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3771463200406147573.post-15413329380220917292014-07-16T13:03:00.002-04:002014-07-16T13:03:51.847-04:00Changes madeWell I have made some changes to the layout sections that are left and did some scenery and track re-alignment projects. I will do a show and tell to go with the photos.
Here is the gap track to span the 2 modules. Prior to this, the modules where not at the same height and I had to remove the one on the right and use my "highly secret, patented" module alignment tool. Once that step was completed and adjustments made, the tracks lined up height wise nearly perfect. After many high speed test, the engineering department signed off on it and the track gang moved right along. Granted that track section will not always be pretty but until it is in a permanent mode, I will make it the best I can.
In the 3 photos above you can see the new tracks that have been installed, tested and have yet to be wired up. I will do another post on the wiring of them.

Hope that you enjoy seeing some of the slow progress that I have made over the past few weeks. Until next time, have a great day.
Nothing is set in stone yet but here are some pics of the work done thus far. Progress will be slow due to work and looking at a few new track plans for ideas. The first shot shows scenery that's been removed from what you see in the 2nd picture. 3rd photo shows tracks removed and module shortened to 6 feet and ready to be adapted to free standing.
stewarttrains_98http://www.blogger.com/profile/08920150479736411604noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3771463200406147573.post-79614238566647210692014-05-14T23:58:00.000-04:002014-05-14T23:58:02.201-04:00some progress made While I do not have any photos of the progress I did the other day, I have removed the track from the ACL diamond to the bridge and beyond going towards the yard. The only remaining track from that section to the yard is the track across the double track bridge and turn out just past the bridge.

My current intent is to save the work I have done with the house on the hill scene as well as the river scene and re-install the track in a more free laced prototype fashion. Meaning the curves will be broader for better operations of all rolling stock and actual appearance.

As for my current yard section (Griffin) I'm undecided on the fate of that area. I would like to salvage the work and just modify the bench work. I have been doing some minor engineering work on how to save it and best turn it into a single module.

I have also considered a complete rebuild of the yard as well but due to money issues (new construction costs and lack of available Atlas code 55 turn outs) I am highly considering the stand alone module option and saving money for a newer yard later and changing the current yard to Raymond. That is if and when I can obtain enough turn outs to do such.

Anyways enough for the ramblings, just letting you all know that I have been actually doing something with the layout in my ever busy life.stewarttrains_98http://www.blogger.com/profile/08920150479736411604noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3771463200406147573.post-47210171491927493482013-05-19T13:21:00.000-04:002013-05-19T13:21:02.706-04:00Down but not outWell since my last post about the layout, I have had to move and take the layout apart.
It did survive the move as it was designed to do. There is some track repairs and then some scenery repairs that will have to be made before trains once again roll. But the main section that was completed, the Griffin area, has been temporarily mounted on the wall to keep it from getting any damage. That module will also receive some upgrades to it as it will no longer be an end module with the track returning to the back side. It will be reconfigured to have another module connect to it on the facing right side. The module that was connected to it on the facing left, will also receive some track upgrades as well.

I do not have a new track plan for the layout but the layout will grow in size to about three times the size it was originally build. It was originally approximately 60 sq ft and will grow to approx. a 12x18 layout with the depth of the layout being two feet deep. This is the tentative plan as of right now. There are some other options that I am considering and one of them is to run it as a point to point layout along three walls of my new train room. The length of two wall runs would be 18ft and the other would be 24ft. As there are quite a few options that I have, I have yet to come to a set plan but when I do, it will be presented here. stewarttrains_98http://www.blogger.com/profile/08920150479736411604noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3771463200406147573.post-71963724857872217872013-01-01T14:07:00.000-05:002013-01-01T14:07:00.396-05:00Goal Almost CompleteWell I had a goal of getting the Griifin area to a stage of being complete without all the details by the end of 2012. This goal was to have the area completed enough to give a non-modeler a sense that it was complete. Well I did not meet that goal completely but I made enormous headway in the past 2 months that I have been working on the area. From the previous post that I have made, I had to work on buildings, build a road and form a hill for the road bridge, do scenery, make trees etc. Well I would say that I achieved 85% of my goal. There is a section of the town that has an open space that I have decided to fill with two buildings that I have to build, paint and eventually detail. Also the tree making project continues. I think that I still need to make about 20 something trees to get the scene where I want it to be. Well here are the current pics of the progress.
I also built a fence and placed around the parking lot of the freight house to break up the openness of the scene.
not completed much time on the layout. But I have completed the segment
of the road that is part of the section that I am working to get semi
complete soon as possible. In the following photos, you will see that I
have painted my side walk and got the road completed. In the last photo,
you can see a rather large gap between the road and the tracks, still
undecided as to what I am going to do to that area. I may leave it open
or drop some buildings in it. There are some other areas that are in the
same undecided stage. But the next step is to mix up the India ink wash
and "pave" the roads and get side walks installed and "plant" the
buildings.
I have had a bridge to no where for quite a while on the layout. Some time ago, I made the hill that will carry the road from town up and over the bridge. I have now completed the forming of the hill and partially completed the road to the bridge.

The process that I used was to stack layers of floral styrafoam up to get close to the road level of the bridge. Then I glues them together and begin to shape the hill with a knife. I then glued the hill in place with hot glue. To round out the hill, I took news paper and balled up and glued with hot glue around the hill. Next step was to cut strips of plaster cloth into about 12 inch strips. I layered the strips on the hill. The final step was to mix up a bowl of plaster and fill in some low spots and begin to connect the roads together.
In the photos you can see the process, the only item left to do is connect the lanes together. In town, the lanes are separated and flow of traffic is on one way streets down main street.
Well in this
post, I am showing the construction of Main Street. This is only the
first step that is being shown here. I have placed my foam part of the
mold into place. I have the balsa wood that the side walks will be glued
to, then another layer of balsa wood will be glued onto the existing
layer between the sidewalks so that the buildings will be level with the
sidewalks. Basically all I doing in this step is creating the road what
will become the curb. This is street section will be divided traffic
with a small grass strip median.

Ok well this is the first of many (hopefully) videos that I hope to post
about the progression of my layout. I know that there are many
different styles and what not that people use. I do not have a real video
camera so I make use of the HD video that is on the point and shoot
camera that I have.
The ending is a little goofed up and don't really have much of a video
editor other than what came on the laptop. So if any of you know of a
simple, easy to use free version, by all means please let me know about
it. It didn't save in a mpeg format and took forever to upload. ( that i
didn't like at all )
Well enough of me rambling on and off to my first ever video production with me in it.
I thought that I would show them to you all out there as a primer of the things that are to come. I will be updating the blog a lot more frequently now that I am finally home and able to complete tasks relating to modeling.
The first series of photos are of a laser kit. The style is known as a shotgun house. Then the next structure is a Central of Georgia style C depot that I have completed as well. It was a laser kit as well.
Hope that you enjoy!
at home on leave. These shots do not represent all the work that I did.
But most of it.

Shelf installed under layout for DCC system and future DCC items that
should be grouped together as much as possible. And throttle hook up
placed on fascia.

CG unit wife purchased for my Christmas present, also installed a decoder in it

Loading dock by Blair Line, parts from 3 kits combined into one model.
Still need to plan and work that small scene once town area progress
more.

One of the few downtown Griffin stores now in a "completed for now"
stage, there are future detail upgrades in the future. mainly working on
getting the many models to a stage of "complete" so to get the scene
finished and move to another.

a "shotgun" house under construction, used a paint and stain method for
the weathering, then used a mechanical pencil to darken the area between
the boards. with the aid of the camera, I see some missed areas. But
when set on the layout and scenery placed around it, should not be able
to notice that error.

Then not pictured is a depot that I have been working on and off again
for some time, installed the bay window, roof and applied roofing
material to just under half of the roof.

Hope that you all enjoy the photos. As we all know I did more fiddling
around with the trains then I did work I suppose. But once I am complete
here and get home then I intend to do less train running and more
working on the layout.
These photos show the various stages of work that has been completed on the layout since I started it. Some of the photos on this post do not represent the current state of the progress. Once I return home on leave, I will take some more photos that show the current state of the layout as it is now. I know that you may think that some of the scenery colors stand out here in the photos and yes that is true, but when when viewed with the layout lighting on and in person, all the colors have a natural looking blend with each other.
I have also purchased a static grass applicator and looking forawrd to learning to use that to add to the scenic effects of the layout, showing the deep country south in the summer time.
I will be restarting the work to the layout and the updates to the blog in the fall when I return home. I am more then ready to return home to be with the family and to start working on the layout again. I have many projects to get started on and as well as get completed. All of the work will be shown in before, during and after photos as well as written descriptions of what is being done. Stayed tuned, only about three months until real progress will be made. Until then, stay safe and happy modeling.stewarttrains_98http://www.blogger.com/profile/08920150479736411604noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3771463200406147573.post-79884665724947441872011-03-10T14:18:00.000-05:002011-03-10T14:18:30.277-05:00Photos of the N layout

I still need to add a coat of plaster over it as it is more porous then the pink foam board. It was easy to cut into shape and was cheap. There will not be a lot of trees here so the plaster will not hinder the scenery work. Still want to be able to see the trains as they pass behind the hill. This was done so to breakup the flat corner of the layout. Think that once the scenery starts to go in it will greatly add to the overall scene here.
I am busy with work and home life, and not so much hobby time. I am still working on the layout as I have time to do so when I am at home and not on the road. Soon as I have some time to get some work done and get some photos posted I will do so.
Thanksstewarttrains_98http://www.blogger.com/profile/08920150479736411604noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3771463200406147573.post-42574784569840948662010-08-24T22:55:00.000-04:002010-08-24T22:55:08.953-04:00More ballastingWell, I have been very busy and have not had much time in the past few weeks to get much done on the layout. I was able to ballast and do some basic scenery work in the yard at Raymond. (pics to come soon) I an in the planning phase of layout out a rd that will be shown later. I am going have to purchase some materials for the project.

Well also will be starting a new job very soon and will not have as much time as I would like to have to work on the layout. So, I will be doing what I can as I can as I will be driving a 18 wheeler and not home like I am now. Progress will be slow but I will post it here when I get something done.stewarttrains_98http://www.blogger.com/profile/08920150479736411604noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3771463200406147573.post-48624287498794358062010-06-19T23:55:00.000-04:002010-06-19T23:55:00.645-04:00Making a roadI know most of us have our own ways to make roads for our layouts. Well some use paper, plastic, plaster or some other mediums. Well I use plaster or joint compound. I happen to have a very big bag of joint compound here at home and decided that I would use that to make my roads with. I have some of them drawn out already so I thought that I would show you step by step how I did this.

I selected a container to mix the joint compound in. Be sure not to use that good mixing bowl in your wife's kitchen unless you plan to replace it. I used a discarded milk jug. Already in the house and didn't have to look hard for it. I cut the jug into 2 halves. I used the lower half and discarded the upper half. Not needed for this project.

I now was ready to begin the road work. I took some WS track foam and cut it in half. I needed to know how wide to make the road so I measured the deck on my bridge and went with that. Maybe a hair smaller. I cut out a template to use. I then take one half of the WS roadbed and tack in place with some track nails to hold in place. You can use T pins, thumb tacks in place of the track nails. I used them because it was on hand and readily available. Once I did that then I took my road template and then repeated this precess on the other side of the road. Now we are ready to pour the plaster.

I went and got the bag and cut a small section out of the bag up near the top so that way it was easy to pour into the milk jug bottom half that i have already prepared. If you have wood or carpet, I recommend that you pour this outside as the dust may spill on the floor. Once I have the plaster in the jug I now add some water. I use the consistency of a thick milk shake. If you get the mixture too runny add more plaster. Stir again and repeat process until you get it to your liking.

Next step is to pour the plaster into the road mold that we have already made. I do so and then take a piece of scrap plastic and use to spread the plaster to my liking. Once I get close to the tracks, I gently shape it so that the road will go up to the tracks. I will come back later and add the actual crossing material.

Once the plaster has set up for about an hour I take and remove all the track nails from the road bed. To remove the roadbed, I gently pull it away from the road in a curved fashion. This reduces any ill side effects of any dried plaster tearing up the wet plaster. But I had only one spot that this happened to.

After I remove the roadbed mold I then cleaned out the milk jug and added some tap water to the jug. Please do not do this step in your sink as the plaster can clog your pipes, I washed out the jug outside. Once I had the tap water in hand, I then did some wet sanding to the side of the road. By this I mean that I wet my finger by dipping it in the fresh water and gently moved my finger across the edges of the road to smooth them down and out. As when you remove the mold there will be very high road edges. You could skip this if you wanted to add some scenery right up to the hard edge of the road. I prefer to slope them down. I proceeded to wet sand with my finger until all my poured road was smoothed down along the edges.

Once the plaster had sat for at least 24 hours and had time to completely dry, it was time to color the road. I mixed a India ink wash using black ink and alcohol. I then started the wash process by working on one side of the road and going across to the other side. You can do this by any means that you choose. I work in straight lines and curve with the road. You can choose to sand the road surface if you choose to do so. I would recommend that you use fine grade of sand paper or you could wet sand the surface to your liking. The material that I chose to use, dried to a nice smooth surface and I chose not to sand the road surface.

After staining the roadway, I took some left over wood material that I had from a laser wood kit that I built in the past. I then proceeded to measure how wide to make the crossing boards. Once I had them marked, I cut them out and test fit them in the position that they needed to go in. Once I was satisfied with the position, and clearance issues, I super glued them into place. As we know if we have been in the hobby for awhile, you can purchase ready made laser cut crossing boards or you can use more modern products such as the rubber or concrete style. I do not have any of the laser cut versions on hand and that is why I decided to make my own. Also, when you do make your own, you can use wood or plastic or any other material that you choose to use. You could even use the plaster and make your crossing that way if you so choose. A word of caution must be said for making your own. Ensure that the height of the material used will be below the trip pins on the couplers. Same as you would do when installing turnouts and checking for any low hanging trip pins. If you do not do this, and the material is too high between the rails, it will snag on the trip pin and cause a derailment or cause damage to your rolling stock. Another word of caution, also common sense to most of us who have been in the hobby for any amount of time, also ensure that you leave a gap for the wheel flanges to pass unobstructed. Otherwise the rolling stock could ride up on the obstruction and derail.
Now all that remains to complete the scene, is to touch up the plaster to the edges of the crossing boards, stain the plaster and mark the roadway. Also, now that you are to this point you can add either crossing signs (cross bucks) or crossing gates. You can also take it a step further and add the road markings for crossing ahead. Or you could make it as simple as placing a stop sign on both sides of the tracks and making a stop line.

Some simply super detailing ideas.
As we all know roads get worked on from time to time. At this point, once the road has been stained you can create patched areas by masking off a section and painting the patched area with any darker shade of of black you choose.
You can all take the edge of an xacto knife and make some crack marks and patch them by simply painting the area the crack with black paint to simulate that the road department simply filled the crack with tar. That is a very common fix found on roads even in today's modern times.stewarttrains_98http://www.blogger.com/profile/08920150479736411604noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3771463200406147573.post-18847472448729185012010-06-17T14:08:00.000-04:002010-06-17T14:08:39.780-04:00Current track plan

Here is a copy of the latest track plan that I have for the layout. I am thinking about adding a passing track and some industry on the back side of Raymond. Then the only hidden trackage would be the staging yard, the back side of Griffin and the back side between Newnan and Raymond.
I will try to post updates as I can as I make progress. This will be a slow process here until I learn how this site works.

Currently the layout has all the track laid and operational. The main method of train control for the current time is DC. I will be converting the locomotives to DCC as time and money permit. As the layout was built, it was pre-wired for DCC operation. I do not get into all the blocks and such for the wiring so it is basically all one block. The layout is designed for up two crews to operate the layout. It can be operated easily by two, one man crews. Others can join in on the fun by either taking the engineer or conductor job duties.
The layout is set up as a continuous run but the towns and work is set up for point to point operation. During operation sessions, it will be loosely set up on time table operations. For switching, it will be replace like cars at worked industries. I am going to keep it simple and will slowly work in some form of car card system.stewarttrains_98http://www.blogger.com/profile/08920150479736411604noreply@blogger.com0
